Erick the Cat

I wrote this song based on the center spread of Stink Bug, an elementary class project zine I had in my collection. I probably picked this up at a table at a zine fest. I’ve been considering doing zine saturdays at the shop. It would be a fun little DiY activity.

Erick the Cat
by Briyan Frederick Baker
Published by Blind Mime Music, ASCAP
Briyan: acoustic guitar, sunoai
Erick the cat, with a flourish and flick,
Wrestles with Floyd whose whiskers don't fit
He pounced on a whisper, then sat on the chair,
The one that is made of invisible air
"Floorwalk now Erick" the child commands,
With magic chalk using crayons for hands.
A tail like a question, a paw like a plot—
He tumbles through scenes that dear Hannah did not
There's reason to wonder
Of treasons so deemed
Of naps and wrong decisions
And stinkbugs in class project zines
Erick in limbo, Erick unwinds,
Climbs up on the table then escapes in the blinds
"SIT! Erick Sit" says the speech bubble queen,
But Erick prefers what slips in between.
Isn't she Erick's owner? A wizard of play,
Inventing new rules for her world every day.
A scribbled-out chaos, a black-inked blot caught,
Holding her secrets that words didn't wraught
There's reason to wonder
Of treasons so deemed
Of naps and wrong decisions
And stinkbugs in class project zines
Erick the cat
and Hannah Owhiler
In the center spread comic
Of a Stink Bug zine one-offer
Filled with Egypt and Halo
Mummies and puzzles
Finger paint water colors
Stapled to stencils and daddy-daughter travels
The recording above was seeded by recording the initial acoustic guitar into my iPhone and building on that in sunoai. Here’s the recording. Feel free to use it in something of your own. Consider it free to use under CC BY 4.0 license. Let me know and I’ll share it too.
