Beware the Night

This was written and recorded on 4-track cassette around 1990 (I believe). I was happy with the sound on this one with my old white Ibanez bass plugged into a fostex rack compressor and into the 4-track. You could push it and get a smooth, warm tone I really liked. I think the guitars were doubled with a bit of chorus and a Roland TR-707 produced the drums. When recreating it with sunoai I updated a few of the lines that had always needed updating and I think I’ve finally got it where it wants to be lyrically after 40 years.

You hide your pain
And save it for a rainy day
To dance and sing
(To reveal everything)

But when night time comes
And holds you like a lover can
You lie to the sun
(The night will tell no one)

[Chorus]
But beware the night
Beware the things you can’t deny
It may feel right
But beware of the night

[1 measure break]

When days grow old
From emptiness you cannot see
Where nothing grows
(But growing old)

[Chorus]
But beware the night
Beware the things you can’t deny
It may feel right
But beware of the night

[Instrumental solo]

When you live a lie
Night time kisses all the pain away
Hush… (don’t cry)
But be wary of a hush and its sneaky alibis

[Chorus]
‘Cos beware the night
Beware the things you can’t deny
It may feel right
But beware of the night

[Chorus]
Oh, beware the night
Beware the things you can’t deny
It may feel right
But beware of the night

[outro]
Beware the night (beware the night)
Beware the night (beware the night)
Beware the night (beware the night)
Beware the night

Hush…
